Too Many Devices Hooked Up to Your Office’s Wi-Fi? Here’s 4 Solutions.

Because the internet typically takes up a large portion of our day-to-day, internet speed makes an immense difference on you and your employees’ quality of work. As a rule of thumb, wireless routers can support up to 250 devices at the same time. If you are experiencing a slower internet connection, it’s important to investigate what may be causing it. Consider the following tips from Nutmeg Technologies to help speed up your internet when too many devices are hooked up to it.

  • Understand Which Devices Are Connected The first step to solving for too many devices being hooked up to the office Wi-Fi, is determining an actual number of connected devices. You may expect a certain number based on the number of your employees, however you may discover some unknown connected devices. You will be able to see which devices in particular are the cause for using up the majority of the Wi-Fi. You may even discover devices that are hooked up to the Wi-Fi that have not been used in years, in that case you should disconnect them immediately. If you find that many employees are connecting their personal devices to the internet, you may want to consider a policy where only work-related devices are allowed to be connected to the Wi-Fi.

  • Choose Certain Devices to Connect Directly to Modem After you’re finished investigating which devices are connected to the Wi-Fi, you may notice certain devices never actually leave the office. You may even notice that these particular devices use a large portion of the Wi-Fi. For these non-portable devices, it’s a good idea to connect them directly to the modem via an Ethernet cable. This will reduce that device’s activity on the Wi-Fi and help speed it up for both the non-portable devices and the portable ones.

  • Do Routine Reboots As simple as it sounds, many times this tip is overlooked. It’s important to keep your technology well maintained so that it is able to perform at its best ability. One way to do so is to give your technology routine breaks. Ideally, you should aim to reboot your routers at least once a month. This will clear out the memory and refresh your connections, in turn help reduce spotty internet. Just be sure that you reboot rather than reset, as a full reset will restore your router to its default factory settings.

  • When in Doubt, Invest in a New Router If you try the above tips and speed is still an issue, it may be time to invest in a new router. Your router may be too old to handle all the connections, or you may simply need one with a larger bandwidth. Give us a call if you need tips on which router would be best for your size of business.
